Welcome to the Relaxation Revolution! It was over thirty years ago, when as a student in the nursing program at the University of Buffalo, I was introduced to the ground-breaking work of Dr. Benson as he published his initial research on the relaxation response. I remember clearly practicing his techniques to calm and heal the body. We learned that healing can NOT take place when we are in the fight/flight stress response. Only when the body is relaxed may it heal.
Over the years in my work as a holistic health educator, I have taught 100's of people how to relax...not realizing until Dr. Benson's new book was published in 2010, that we were affecting the body down to the genetic level. We now know, without a doubt, that body-mind healing is an vital component in any comprehensive healing and wellness program, an equal partner to surgery and pharmaceutical treatments. It won't be long before everyone with any type of illness will know how to include the relaxation response into their self-care routine.
